Country Director Côte d’Ivoire

To strengthen our work in Côte d’Ivoire (CDI), IDH is recruiting a Country Director. Are you a strong operational leader with a proven track record in the fields of cocoa sustainability and/or sustainable landscape convening and management. The role

The Country Director CDI leads IDH’s operations in Côte d’Ivoire. This includes the management and incorporation of the IDH office in Abidjan, representing IDH in-country, as well as leading IDH’s programs in CDI. As Country Director there will be three key pillars in your scope of work:

Leadership of country operations and representation of IDH in Côte d’Ivoire

The Country Director leads IDH’s local operations and manages a team of currently 4 FTE. You will closely liaise with our global headquarters for budgeting, reporting and other country office operations.

In CDI, IDH has a long-standing track record in the cocoa sector. Within this role you closely connect to the IDH cocoa market demand team that works on the European sustainability initiatives. These initiatives can only become successful in strong partnership with the companies, CCC and other stakeholders in the CDI cocoa sector. Therefore, as Country Director you represent IDH vis à vis various public and private stakeholders. In addition, you also look out for fundraising opportunities for IDH work in CDI.

Overall management of the Landscapes Program in Côte d’Ivoire

As Country Director you will lead and manage a program on sustainable landscape management and forest conservation. This program has two key components; the Cocoa & Forests Initiative at national level and the ISLA Landscape program with projects in the Cavally & Guemon Regions. Any other potential project  developed will also be led by you.

Concerning the Cocoa and Forest Initiative you lead the convening activities; you coordinate different public and private stakeholder committees and you support the secretariat of the initiative. All with the objective to coordinate, manage and hold stakeholders accountable on agreed actions. Concerning the Landscape program , you oversee the implementation of the program in close collaboration with the program partners and the global landscapes team. All with the aim to find a balance between forest protection, agricultural production and social inclusion of the population.

Living Income

Last but not least, you oversee the development of a new strategic partnerships with industry, government authorities, and civil society on living income. IDH aims to set up a new program in Côte d’Ivoire following the recently ended Farmer Cooperative Investment Program (FCIP) with the Conseil Café de Cocoa (CCC). The next phase of the program will address the issue of living income through convening of multi-stakeholders, the set up of a Technical Assistance Facility and will create access to smallholder finance investment funds such as the IDH Farmfit Fund. A Senior Program Manager will coordinate this new program under your supervision.

Within this role you report to the Regional Director Africa.

Who you are

IDH is looking for an organized, self-motivated, team player with strong leadership skills. You have a strong interest in supply chain sustainability and forest conservation. You are analytical, business minded and practical. Your strengths lie in organizing and prioritizing work independently. You are a good communicator and prefer working in a results-oriented, flexible and hands-on manner and  you execute given projects quickly and thoroughly (also under pressure).

What you bring

  • Working and thinking at Master’s degree level, preferably in agribusiness or a related area;
  • A minimum of 10-15 years working experience in an international business environment;
  • Proven experience in managing an office or organization (and its related HR, Finance and Legal operations);
  • Knowledge of sustainability, supply chains, forest conservation and farmer income in Côte d’Ivoire;
  • Deep knowledge of the political economy of the cocoa sector;
  • Strong track record in convening multi-stakeholder groups (high level government and industry representatives) in complex institutional landscapes;
  • Fluency in English and French;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially a very good working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Based in Côte d’Ivoire and/or working permit for Côte d’Ivoire.
