The role

As Investment Manager you will be part of the IDH Investment Management B.V team. IDH Investment Management B.V is fund manager of the IDH Farmfit Fund. You will work closely together with with investment professionals from other financial institutions / investment funds, and key staff from the supply chain companies in the design and execution of impactful transactions. You will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

Your key responsibilities will be in the following areas:

• Client origination, deal structuring and monitoring: The role of Investment Manager centres around deal origination, structuring, execution and monitoring. Hereby you will target value chain companies (commodity traders, input suppliers etc), Agri SME’s and financial institutions. Over time you will build up an investment portfolio, which you will monitor and report on. You will maintain relationships with existing clients and will work closely together with the IDH Farmfit Fund team in Utrecht and the IDH Business Support team on developing investable business models, structuring and executing transactions that qualify for the IDH Farmfit Fund.

• Strategy and product development: Within the Farmfit team you will participate in the development of innovative blended finance structures that contribute on delivering the Fund’s objectives. Also, you will be involved in strategy development and implementation for IDH Investment Management B.V.

• External representation: You will represent the IDH Farmfit Fund to (potential) clients, investors, partners, and international institutions. You drive an investment agenda which engages partners and stakeholders towards next-stage investment solutions in market transformation.

For you it is no problem to work on multiple assignments at the same time and you excel whilst working under pressure. With your analytical skills, you can make complex issues simple. As you are creative and innovative in structuring investment transactions you create trust with your stakeholders and seal the deal. You are the kind of person that finds it easy to build long lasting productive work relationships with all kinds of people and with these people skills you can work in a small and multi-disciplinary team, with team members from all over the world.

What you bring

• 4 to 7 years of relevant working experience, in a role as investment professional in an investment firm, bank or relevant consultancy;
• Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as economics, business or law;
• Deep knowledge and expertise in international commodity supply chains, corporate sustainability (environmental and social issues), and the reality of developing & emerging economies;
• Strong networks in financial institutions and the world of impact investors/donors
• Fluency in English, a second and third language is a plus.

IDH Investment Management is the Fund Manager of the IDH Farmfit Fund and the Farmfit Guarantee Facility which houses a 2nd loss guarantee for senior investors underwritten by the US International Development Finance Corporation. Around 270 M smallholders farmers globally are deprived from essential services to properly develop their farming systems and increase household incomes. In Africa, regional food security for the rapidly growing population crucially depends on the successful integration of smallholder production in regional value chains.  This requires companies, civil society and government to innovate together, develop business models and forge new supply chain collaborations. IDH Farmfit Business Support drives this transformation by supporting companies and financial institutions to analyze, innovate, and scale their smallholder business models. Drawing on the lessons from analyzing and supporting 100+ companies, the Farmfit Intelligence Center generates strategic insights into best practices and key success factors in smallholder inclusion. Farmfit Business Support and Intelligence are Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). To take these smallholder business models to scale, the IDH Farmfit Fund has been announced. This is a 100 M EUR fund, in which the Dutch Government and several large multinational companies have committed to invest in. USAID, the development arm of the US Government is expected to support the IDH Farmfit Fund with a EUR 250 M guarantee facility. The Fund will invest in smallholder value chains through companies, such as commodity traders, service providers and financial institutions.  By taking high risk positions the Fund aims to incentivize both banks (development and commercial banks) and supply chain companies to move beyond their comfort zones and invest sizeable amounts in innovative farmer financing structures. The objective of the Fund is to lift to improve the livelihoods of at least 3 M farmers and make farmer finance a mainstream investment class.
