Nigeria – Program Manager Value Chain Development

The role

To strengthen our Value Chain Development (VCD) program in Nigeria, IDH is seeking a business-oriented team player to join the Nigeria Team, as a Program Manager. The Program Manager will be a member of the IDH team in Nigeria where you will facilitate and drive the value chain development program.  You will play a leading role in the convening and coordinating different public and private stakeholders around the sustainability initiatives of IDH in Nigeria. You will also focus on the development and implementation of the projects, in close collaboration with the local team.

In this position you will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Support the convening of the public and private sectors around IDH VCD program activities in Nigeria
  • Conduct market assessment of selected value chains in the country to determine opportunities for IDH VCD program in Nigeria
  • Conduct diagnostic assessments and gap analysis of SMEs to determine and design strategies for capability enhancement and viability.
  • Support the design, development and implementation of inclusive value chain development program activities to increase and improve the commercialization and business operations of SMEs and farmers.
  • Work with the private sector and other stakeholders to promote and develop the agricultural value chains in Nigeria to improve productivity, quantity and quality of outputs for national, regional or international markets;
  • Support and build the capacity of SMEs and formal farmer groups to build efficient supply chains to meet the challenges of supplying the organized end markets;
  • Co-design and develop with partners, efficient monitoring mechanism to capture and measure impacts;
  • Develop strategy for effective fund-raising for further development of agriculture sector in Nigeria, for farmers and SMEs;
  • Support SMEs, farmers to access premium markets – domestic, regional and EU, UAE etc.
  • As an independent worker you are able to prepare annual work plans, progress reports, organise and facilitate stakeholder meetings and strategically and practically support companies (SMEs) and farmers.

Specific deliverables will be agreed with the IDH Nigeria Country Director at the start of this role.

You are both analytical and practical, able to work independently and on different projects from beginning to end. You possess the ability to execute given projects quickly and thoroughly, maintaining a good overview on delegated tasks and are able to actively look to improve programme management systems and IDH quality of delivery. You are a well-rounded and solution-driven professional, passionate about your work and what IDH stands for. With your people skills you are approachable and easy to talk to. This makes it easy for you to work with flexibility, entrepreneurship, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort. You have experience in organizing multi-stakeholder coalitions based on your networking skills and ability to share your expertise and excel in your verbal and written communication skills. You are honest, transparent, energetic and a fast learner that demonstrates highest level of integrity. All these with a good sense of humour and a positive output.

What you bring

  • Master’s Degree in agriculture or business related fields;
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in agricultural value chain development or commodity programs in Nigeria;
  • Relevant private sector experience and good understanding of the Nigeria business landscape. Preferably in supply chains development or management;
  • Experience in agri-business development especially commercialization of SMEs and farmers in Africa;
  • Strong IT skills in Microsoft business packages, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Knowledge, experience and expertise in policy and advocacy relevant to Nigeria
  • Experience working with Nigerian policymakers at federal and state-levels Ability to translate complex ideas and information into simple messages and strategies.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English.
