Guiana Shield Tropical Timber Program

The Guiana Shield Initiative financially supported actions, in collaborations with sector organizations and the Surinamese government, which will contribute to resolving or diminishing perceived bottlenecks that are currently restricting forest management certification or access to the European markets.

Suriname is one of the most afforested countries in the world. 90% of its surface is still covered by tropical forest vegetation. Despite the abundance of this natural resource, forestry never really developed in significant economic activity for the country. Because of the huge economic potential, it is important to facilitate this and have conservation of the tropical forest provide economic growth.
