Business model

Biomass Fuel Co, Ltd (“Biomass Fuel”) is a Japanese company engaged in the production and supply of wood bioenergy, with the aim to address the bioenergy needs in the context of the energy transition globally. The company started to operate in its local market (Japan), then expanded its trading and production capacities to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Through its subsidiary Biomass Fuel Vietnam Co., Ltd (“BFV”), the company is operating a first pellet plant in Vietnam and planning to open a second one. Through a sustainable sourcing strategy, BFV intends to improve smallholder planted forests’ agricultural and environmental practices, while improving smallholder livelihoods.

Investment need

The company currently seeks private investment to develop a second pellet plant and expand its sourcing base of smallholder planted forests in Vietnam.

Technical assistance

  • Validate the feasibility of the investment project (commercial business model and E&S impact) including bothpellet plants;
  • Provide recommendations for operational, strategic and/or market positioning improvements; and
  • Evaluate whether the business model fits the Fund’s impact criteria, including Land Degradation Neutrality impact.

Technical assistance support from the LDN TAF does not constitute a commitment from the LDN Fund, or Mirova, to finance directly or indirectly the project described above. Any such commitment shall be subject to inter alia, a detailed technical, financial and legal due diligence of the company and the project, as well as all required LDN Fund investment committee approvals and satisfactory documentation.
