Implementing partner: Blueyou Consulting LTD
Other partner(s): Omarsa
Country: Ecuador, Gulf of Guayaquil
Species: Litopenaeus vannamei
Targeted volume: 5,400 MT (large-scale farms)
Project duration: June 2013 – December 2014
Blueyou Consulting is working in Ecuador with its local partner in order to improve shrimp farm management, practices and farming inputs. The project aims to reduce environmental and social impacts of marine shrimp farming.
The goal of the project is to ensure that there is full traceability of the product to the farms and that each farm complies with the most recent Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) shrimp standard. All feed used in the project will meet the ASC standards for feed, ensuring it comes from traceable and sustainable marine sources. The farms already have mangrove restoration projects as part of their existing organic certification, which meets the ASC requirements.
Blueyou’s project serves as a stepping-stone and basis for further and future scaling-up of the same activity in other major countries of marine shrimp production such as Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh. Blueyou Consulting will establish linkages and networks with producers and local authorities in these countries. These projects have a strong link to the European and North American markets, where Blueyou has committed buyers and importers both in retail and food service.
“Our project with Omarsa is a pilot model for the new ASC shrimp farming standard, which is quite demanding and challenging for most producers. By implementing the standard with a large-scale, vertically integrated producer such as Omarsa, we can gain important experience for other farm level improvement programs in Ecuador, focusing on smaller-scale farms”
Matthias Krebs, Managing Director, Blueyou Consulting LTD
“Omarsa S.A, since its foundation, has constantly invested into improving all relevant areas of concern for marine shrimp farming. The project with Blueyou Consulting and the pending ASC certification will certainly help to further strengthen our position as a responsible shrimp export company that is dedicated to sustainable aquaculture”
