Higher yields and less pesticides use in Mozambique

Despite challenges for cotton farmers across the country caused by unpredictable weather conditions BCI farmers achieved 15% higher yields and 6% less pesticides input, resulting in 16% higher profits.

The Harvest Report can be accessed through an interactive map on the BCI website and details the results that BCI Farmers in Mozambique achieved as well as contextual factors from the latest harvest.

Highlights from the report include:

  • 16% higher profits despite significant crop losses for many cotton farmers due to both flooding, and drought conditions.
  • Improved awareness of fertiliser and better access to fertiliser inputs.
  • 6% less pesticide usage.

Better Cotton is sown and harvested in different annual cycles across the world, which means that harvest data becomes available from different regions throughout the calendar year. When a country’s harvest results are finalized, they are released on the 2015 Harvest Report map on an ongoing basis.

Since 2008 BCI and IDH have worked together to boost Better Cotton  production and market uptake, resulting in global production of over 1,2 MT cotton lint in 2016. See also impact results at the cotton sector pages.
