UK retailer living wage commitment marks one year of going bananas

For banana workers to fully support their families and achieve a decent standard of living – like all of us – they need living wages. The UK Retailer Commitment on Living Wages in Banana Supply chains is striving for just that. Today, IDH launched a report marking one year since nine UK retailers pledged to strive for workers in their banana supply chains to receive a living wage by the end of 2027.

The report shows data from 554 hired labour banana farms and 84,672 workers, giving insights into the number of farms and workers with living wage gaps. This year, retailers will focus on how to close those gaps, including banana sector-friendly purchasing practices. This initiative complements similar ones in the Belgian, Dutch and German markets to make living wages a reality for all banana workers. Read the full report here: UK Banana Report 2023
