Journey Map: Path to the Smallholder Innovation Platform

From the start of IDH, we have been investing in smallholder livelihood improvements through so-called “Service Delivery Models” (SDMs). These structures provide services (like training, inputs, finance, access to markets, processing, etc.) to farmers and are offered by service providers (processors, traders, farmer organizations, government extension systems, etc.).

In 2015 we developed a data-driven, structured methodology to analyse the “economic sustainability” of SDMs by calculating the Return on Investment for farmers and service providers. This methodology has gained traction and we have now analysed 30 different SDMs in coffee, cocoa, spices, cotton, cassava and several staple crops.

In this Journey map you’ll better understand the evolution of our thinking and the insights we have gathered from our partners along the way.
