Plan to develop deforestation-free livestock chain drawn up by Marfrig and IDH receives international award

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Brazil announced in May, during an event in Rio de Janeiro, the winners of the 8th edition of the 2022 Sustainability Award, which acknowledges the initiatives of companies that encourage socio-environmental, diversity and innovation actions.

Two years after being introduced, the Marfrig Green+ Plan, designed in partnership with IDH, was the winner in the Society & Environment category. The Plan was submitted in July 2020, aiming to develop mechanisms to ensure that 100% of Marfrig’s production chain is sustainable, traceable, and deforestation-free by 2030.

Marfrig Green+ was devised on the basis of the production – conservation – inclusion approach and is based on three pillars: development of innovative financial mechanisms, technical assistance for the farmers and monitoring and traceability technologies. Through Marfrig Green+, specific actions have also been established, divided into three axes: direct suppliers, indirect suppliers, and sectorial approach.

The support to the Sustainable Production of Calves Program, in Mato Grosso, is part of the development of technical assistance models, which also includes the development of proposals to provide access to credit that meets the needs of the livestock farmers.

As part of this strategy, in February 2021, Marfrig signed a USD 30 million, 10-year, sustainability-linked financing agreement with Stichting andgreen.fund (“&Green”) for the inclusion of indirect suppliers, cattle traceability and reducing deforestation risks in the Amazon and Cerrado.
