Creating a viable business model and optimizing farm data to realize sustainable production

The IDH Learning Launch Pad series helps agribusinesses solve specific technology challenges. In this first session, six experts helped SpiceUp re-invent their business model to optimize farm data to realize sustainable pepper production in Indonesia. During the six day ‘design sprint’ the experts, specialized in technology and business development, came together and explored SpiceUp’s challenges and, through rapid prototyping, created effective solutions.

The paper is now published outlining the two key concepts that were developed:

  • A cooperative-based farming model, in which SpiceUp will train subcontracted farmers (“Ranger”) in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and data logging.
  • A data exchange platform based on digital tools, which aims to spread GAP and track farm data in direct dialogue with participating farmers.

The white paper outlines each of the concepts, including stakeholder insights, strategy, key features, initial business models, draft roadmaps for next steps, and documentation of some rapid prototypes.

The video shows how these concepts were developed in the one week ‘design sprint’.
